What does A-grade thermo-treated aspen mean for your sauna?

What does A-grade thermo-treated aspen mean for your sauna?

A-grade thermo-treated aspen is aspen that has been heat-treated and graded according to a supplier’s quality criteria. The grade can describe features such as surface finish and permitted natural characteristics, but it does not have one universal meaning. In particular, A-grade does not always mean knot-free.

For sauna benches and panels, start with the intended look and use. A smooth, knot-free bench board may be the right choice for a seating surface, while a panel with visible knots may suit a wall or ceiling design. Check the specifications of the exact product before ordering.

Does A-grade thermo-treated aspen have knots?

It can. Grading rules differ between producers and products. Pieksäwood’s Roots thermo-treated aspen panel is described as A-grade quality with natural knots. Its visible knots are an intentional part of the panel’s appearance.

Pieksäwood also offers thermo-treated aspen bench boards and panels described as knot-free and resin-free. If an uninterrupted surface is important to your sauna project, specify knot-free separately rather than relying on the A-grade label alone.

The permitted appearance of the front, back and edges can also differ. Ask which sides are graded and whether the stated quality applies to every surface that will remain visible after installation.

How does thermo-treatment change aspen?

Thermo-treatment uses controlled heat and steam to modify the wood. At Pieksäwood, the process includes drying the timber before raising it to the treatment temperature. It gives aspen a brown tone, reduces moisture absorption and improves dimensional stability compared with untreated wood. No chemical preservatives are added during the process.

These changes can be useful in a sauna, where temperature and humidity vary. They do not make wood maintenance-free or guarantee that individual boards will never move, crack or change appearance. Installation, ventilation and care still matter.

Grade and thermo-treatment describe different things: the grade concerns the finished product’s quality criteria, while thermo-treatment changes properties of the wood.

Why is thermo-treated aspen used for sauna benches?

Bench wood needs a carefully finished surface because people sit directly against it. Pieksäwood describes its thermo-treated aspen bench boards as smooth, knot-free and resin-free, making those particular products suitable for sauna seating.

It would be inaccurate to say that every piece of aspen is naturally knot-free: Pieksäwood’s knotty Roots collection demonstrates the difference between the wood species and a selected product. Likewise, no wood should be described as unable to feel hot under every sauna condition. Assess the finished board’s surface and follow its installation instructions.

Is thermo-treated aspen suitable for sauna panels?

Yes. Pieksäwood offers thermo-treated aspen wall and ceiling panels in different profiles and appearances. Its knot-free STP panel creates a clean, even look, while the Roots panel highlights natural knots.

This makes the choice more specific than “A-grade or lower grade.” Decide whether you want a uniform surface or visible wood character, then compare the relevant product profiles, dimensions and samples.

What should you check before buying A-grade thermo-treated aspen?

Ask the supplier for the product’s grading criteria and confirm the details that matter to your project:

  • Knots: Are they excluded, limited or intentionally visible?
  • Visible surfaces: Which faces and edges does the grade cover?
  • Finish: Is the surface smooth enough for its intended use, particularly on benches?
  • Dimensions: Are the profile, usable width and available lengths suitable for the installation?
  • Colour: How much natural variation should you expect? A physical sample is more reliable than a screen image.
  • Use and care: Is the product intended for benches, sauna walls or ceilings, and what care does the supplier recommend?

Pieksäwood says it saws Finnish aspen at its own sawmill and manufactures and heat-treats its wood products in Pieksämäki. That gives buyers useful information about where the material is processed; it does not establish that Finnish aspen is inherently stronger or more stable than all imported alternatives.

Choose by product specification, not by grade name alone. When evaluating options, request samples of Pieksäwood’s thermo-treated aspen bench boards and panels to check the surface and colour for your sauna before making a final decision. Contact us to request product samples.
